Ternate (Antara Maluku) - The administration of South Halmahera district, North Maluku province, in cooperation with a Canadian investor, is developing Widi Islands as a global tourism destination, a local administration official stated here on Monday.
Daud Djubaidi, the public relations and protocol head of South Halmahera stated last week that the district administration has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with a Canadian investor to develop Widi Islands.
In the MoU, the district administration will issue policies and regulations to support the development of the islands as a tourism destination and will also build infrastructure such as a transportation network.
In the meantime, the Canadian investor will focus on the construction of accommodation facilities on Widi Islands, such as resorts and cottages for the visitors and carry out a global promotion campaign.
In addition, the Canadian investor will also build an airport on Widi Islands to facilitate easier access to the visitors.
The journey to Widi Islands from Labuha, the capital city of South Halmahera, via sea transportation takes 11 hours.
Daud noted that Widi Islands will attract both domestic and foreign tourists because of its white sandy beaches and panoramic natural views of the sea.
The Widi Islands comprise 99 small scenic islands that have the potential to attract tourists.
To visit Widi Islands, tourists can take a flight to Ternate and then continue their journey using sea transportation or a small plane to Labuha. The visitors can finally use a ship to reach the islands.
