Ambon, Maluku, Jan 17 (Antara) - An earthquake measuring 5.2 on the Richter Scale shook Buru and Ambalauw Islands in Maluku Province on Sunday, prompting local residents to stay outdoors.

The epicenter of the earthquake which struck at 08.22 a.m. local time was located 63 kilometers from the Buru district capital of Namlea and 98 kilometers east of the Buru Selatan district capital of Namrole at a depth of 10 kilometers, spokesman for the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) Office in Maluku Province Kustoro said.

He said the quake was felt by people living in Namlea and Namrole at III on the Modified Mercalli scale and in the Maluku provincial capital of Ambon at II on the Modified Mercalli scale.

There was no immediate report of casualties or material damage.

The quake was also not significant enough to cause a tsunami.
