Saumlaki, Maluku, Feb 11 (Antara) - West Southeast Maluku (MTB) District Head Bitsael S. Temmar has praised the Ministry of Transportation`s plan to encourage opening a trade route between the district town of Saumlaki and Darwin, Australia.

"We highly laud the central government`s plan to open a trade route between Saumlaki and Darwin," Temmar remarked here on Saturday.

He believed the good intentions of the central government should be channeled properly, and the district government and local communities should act promptly to boost economic performance, with the goal of building a better relationship with Australia.

"The most appropriate basis for the development of relations with Australia is in the economic field," Temmar affirmed.

Further, he added that opening a trade route between Saumlaki and Darwin will have a positive impact on the people in the district, as they will be able to witness the central government`s focus to develop the remote area.

The MTB district head made the statement after Transportation Minister Budi Karya Sumadi expressed keenness to open a trade route with the Australian Northern Territory, both by sea or air.

Sumadi and his entourage visited Saumlaki on Thursday and echoed the central government`s keenness to open a trade route for marine products between Saumlaki and Darwin.

The transportation minister remarked that the trade route between the two cities was in line with the government`s efforts to open business opportunities for the economic sector in the maritime field in MTB in a bid to tap the district`s abundant potential of marine resources.

"In the next week or two, I would like to receive a report from West Southeast Maluku District Head Bitsael S. Temmar on how the fishery potential in this district can tapped, and if possible, we could open a pioneer ship route to Darwin first and then evaluate the results," Sumadi revealed.

The transportation minister admitted that MTB has abundant fisheries potential, but it needs to be encouraged through the implementation of government policies to draw investment opportunities, so that the local fishery production can reap high value when sold abroad, especially in Darwin, Australia.

Sumadi said his working visit to MTB was aimed at obtaining first-hand information on the possibility of opening a direct flight service or a cruise from Saumlaki to Darwin.
