Ambon, Maluku, Aug 9 (Antara) - State-owned telecommunication company PT Telekonsel has operated its first Base Transceiver Station (BTS) on Lirang Island, Southwest Maluku (MBD) District.
State Enterprises Minister Rini Soemarno, in the company of Pattimura Military Commander Major General Doni Monardo and MBD District Head Barnabas Orno, inaugurated the operations of BTS on the Island on Wednesday.
"Once the telecommunication network becomes operational on Lirang Island, the local people can communicate with their friends and relatives in other islands and provinces," Soemarno remarked on Wednesday.
She expressed hope that telecommunication services would also be able to encourage increased economic activity in the outlying island of Lirang, adjacent to Timor Leste.
In the meantime, Telekomsel Network Director Bob Apriawan said the company will continue to realize its commitment to offer connectivity to areas in Indonesia that earlier did not receive telecommunication services.
"We are always working to build a network to promote the country and serve the people throughout Indonesia, without exception, including in areas that are not profitable in terms of business," he noted.
Telkomsel BTS on Lirang Island is also able to meet the communication needs of thousands of users.
