Ternate (Antara Maluku) - An earthquake measuring 4.7 on the Richter scale shook Ternate City in North Maluku Province on Thursday evening, forcing local residents to rush outdoors.

The epicenter of the quake which struck at 05.35 p.m. local time was located 01.07 degrees northern latitude and 127.92 degrees eastern longitude at a depth of 10 km, Head of the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) Office in Ternate City Suwardi said on Thursday.

"The quake was also strongly felt by people in Jailolo City, West Halmahera District at II-III (on the Modified Mercalli Scale)," he said.

There was no immediate report of casualties or material damage.

A powerful earthquake measuring 7.3 on the Richter scale jolted Ternate and its surrounding areas last Saturday (Nov 15).

Suwardi said the earthquake which was located 1.94 degrees northern latitude and 126.50 degrees eastern longitude at a depth of 10 km had the potential to trigger a tsunami.

The earthquake prompted the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) to issue a tsunami warning for some eastern Indonesian provinces.

Based upon an analysis from the Pacific Disaster Center, a tsunami reaching a height of between 0.3 and one meter was expected to reach eastern Indonesian coastal areas, BPPB spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho said last Saturday.

However, few hours later, the agency lifted the early warning as there were no major tsunamis happened.
