Ternate (Antara Maluku) - Sea toll road project would contribute to economic development in North Maluku, which is made up of small islands, a local leader said.

Basri Salama, a member of the Regional Representative Council (DPD) from North Maluku said the Ternate city administration should seek a budget for the project in North Maluku.

DPD members from North Maluku would support the plan that would facilitate sea transport in that region, Basri said said here on Sunday.

President Joko Widodo has pledged to build "sea toll road" to facilitate transport between the western and eastern regions of the country aimed at creating equitable prosperity.

Eastern regions of the country is still far lagging behind in economic prosperity partly because of lack connectivity.

The project, which is part of the long term program of making the country a world maritime axis, will include development of many new ports and modernization of existing ones.

Basri said the sea toll road project is aimed at improving connectivity to strengthen the national integrity of the country, which is made up mostly of sea territory.

He said he supports immediate implementation of the sea toll road project especially in eastern regions, which is made up mainly of small islands.
