Ternate (Antara Maluku) - People in this North Maluku city were jolted by tremors when mount Gamalama erupted spewing volcanic ashes on Thursday morning.

Head of the volcano monitoring post Darno Lamane said the volcano began to show growing activities on Wednesday with 90 times of tremor.

"We would continue observation of the activities of the 1,700 meter volcano to determine if it is necessary to evacuate the people of Ternate," Darno said.

He said the people, however, have been warned the people not come closer than 1,500 meter from the peak.

The Babullah airport of Ternate still function normally.

Last time the volcano erupting was in December 2014 disrupting flight schedule to and from Ternate .

The airport was closed for two weeks almost paralyzing the economy of the small island of Ternate.
