Ambon, Maluku, Feb 26 (Antaranews Maluku) - An earthquake measuring 6.0 on the Richter scale rocked Buru Island in Maluku province on Monday night but there was no immediate report of material damage.

The epicenter of the quake which struck at 20.34 West Indonesia Standard Time (WIB) was located in the sea about 79 km northeast of Buru Island at a depth of 10 km, according to the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG).

The agency said the quake did not have the potential to trigger a tsunami.

The tremor was felt by people in Namlea, capital of Buru district at III-IV MMI and in Kairatu, Seram Island at II-III MMI.

The BMKG asked local residents not to panic or to be easily influenced by misleading report such as on tsunami. (S012)
