Ambon, Maluku, March 6 (Antara) - The 350th commemoration of Breda Treaty, an agreement between the British and the Dutch on Run Island located in Banda Islands in 1667, will be held in the United States in Aug 2017.
Economic Consul at the Consulate General of the Republic of Indonesia in New York, Winanto Ady, said here on Monday that the event should also be held in Ambon, Maluku province.
"The commemoration should also be held in Run Island in Oct or Nov 2017," he stated.
Breda Treaty was an agreement between the Netherlands and the UK made in 1667, when the Dutch secured a worldwide monopoly on nutmeg by forcing England to give up their claim on Run Island, the most remote part of the Banda Island, while the UK got Manhattan in exchange.
Maluku Vice Governor Zeth Sahuburua said Run administration and the locals regularly conduct the traditional Belang boat race, which has been attracting tourists from all over the world.
"I want the commemoration of Treaty Breda to be held on Run Island as well to develop Banda`s tourism and Maluku Islands in general," he noted.
Some events are also held at the Indonesian Consulate General in New York in order to promote Indonesia, especially Maluku, ahead of the anniversary of Breda Treaty.
Run Island, popularly known as the Spice Islands, was a center of nutmeg and mace trade.
Being coveted by European traders and rulers, the island was first occupied by the British in the 17th century. The British were soon expelled by the Dutch and gave up all claims of the island to the Dutch.
