This is what we have been thinking. How to carry out preventive and repressive measure simultaneouslyAmbon, Dec. 9 (Antara) - Head of Maluku`s high prosecution office Chuk Suryosumpeno said corruption in Indonesia is no longer seen as something illegal.
Many people considered it natural to commit corruption when they have the chance, Chuck said here on Wednesday.
"It is such way of thinking that needs immediate redressing," he added.
Therefore, law enforcement has to be carried our simultaneously, with preventive and repressive actions, he said.
"Preventive and repressive measures are equally important as the potency of corruption exists every where," he said.
He said he had sought to adopt the system when he was first named chief of the high prosecution office in Maluku.
"This is what we have been thinking. How to carry out preventive and repressive measure simultaneously," he said.
For that purpose, anti corruption campaigns is important to be made a public slogan, he said.
Anti corruption thinking has to be implanted in the minds of children when they are still at school and among government officials, he said.
Preventive measures, however, should not weaken repressive measures as corruption is already rife in the country, he said.
In the period of January-November this year, 59 corruption cases were already executed by the the Maluku prosecution office and 45 other and seven cases from police are in the process of prosecution.
In addition there were 75 corruption cases being handled by the Maluku prosecution office including 36 cases in the pearly phase of investigations and 39 being processed.
During that period, the prosecution office succeeded in saving Rp1.95 billion in state fund from the cases being investigated not including Rp550 million from cases already executed and Rp1.13 billion in compensation.
Chuk said law enforcement in corruption cases in Maluku is not as easy as in other parts of the country, saying Maluku is made up of small islands that need adequate transport facility.
Bringing a suspect from one remote island to the provincial city will cost much money and time, he added.
"Transport will need high cost as corruption court is found only in Ambon, the provincial city." he said, citing, bringing a suspect from eastern Seram through land and sea transport to Ambon would cost Rp3.5 million.
