Ternate, N Maluku, Jan 27 (Antara) - The central government, through the Transportation Ministry, is ready to fund the development of Kurapasai Airport in West Halmahera District, North Maluku, on condition that the local government first begins the development using local funds.

"The Ministry of Transportation will allocate funds from the state budget in two stages for the construction of the Kurapasai Airport after the local government completes the initial construction," West Halmahera District Head Danny Missy remarked here on Friday.

Missy said the local government will meet the requirements of the Transportation Ministry to begin construction of the 800-meter-long runway of the airport this year, with funds from the regional budget.

He expressed hope that in the first stage of the Kurapasai airport development in 2018, the Ministry of Transport would allocate budget for the subsequent construction.

In the meantime, Garuda Indonesia President Director Arif Wibowo had stated in Jakarta on Wednesday that Indonesia`s state enterprises ministry will soon conduct a nationwide upgrade of some 76 small airports, with runways measuring 800-1,000 meters in length, in the next five years.

"Revitalization of these airports will be conducted in areas having economic growth and high population and whose export markets hold vast potential," Wibowo remarked.

He noted that PT Garuda Indonesia, PT Angkasa Pura I-II, PT Dirgantara Indonesia, and the Technical Services Unit of the Ministry of Transportation will be involved in the revitalization work.

Wibowo said his party is conducting an evaluation to determine airports to be included in the revitalization program, especially those that have not been well explored but have huge potential to be developed.
