Ambon, Maluku, July 19 (Antara) - Vice President of US National Academy of Sciences Diane Griffin opened the 7th Indonesian-American Kavli Frontiers of Science (KFoS) symposium in Ambon in the Indonesian province of Maluku on Wednesday.

In her speech Diane said that this was the seventh KFoS and NAS was very enthusiastic to sponsor the symposium which will discuss sciences in Indonesia.

"It is fantastic. We will discuss science today," she said.

NAS is a non-governmental organization set in 1863 by President Abraham Lincoln to support development of sciences in the US through research programs and studies with focused subjects.

NAS is responsible for giving analysis, independent and objective suggestions to countries regarding issues related to development of science and technology.

NAS members are active contributors to international scientific community and has contributed to advancement of sciences.

"NAS was established by President Abraham Lincoln in the midst of a civil war. He had a futuristic view regarding many issues due to the situation in the US then," she said.

Apart from contributing to its country, NAS also promotes sciences and cooperate with other national academies in other parts of the world regarding important scientific issues.

"We cooperate and partner with other scientific academies and now with Indonesia to conduct the symposium. Welcome to KFoS Indonesia-US. We hope you will get good ideas during the meeting," she said.

Actually the symposium has already started since July 17 but officially it was only opened on July 19.

No less than 70 scientists fron Indonesia and the US took part in the event which is scheduked until July 21.
