Ternate, N Maluku, May 10 (Antaranews Maluku) - Youth and Sports Minister Imam Nahrawi lauded North Maluku`s athletes, who have brought laurels to Indonesia through their achievements in various international championships.
"Surely, the Rexy Mainaky brothers, who have brought pride to North Maluku in badminton, proves that this province has several talented athletes," he emphasized here on Thursday.
Moreover, the passion for soccer in Ternate is quite high and is apparent by the number of national soccer team players, such as Zulham Zamrun, Ilham Udin Armaiyn, and Rizki Pora.
In fact, North Maluku earlier had outstanding national soccer team players, including Syafruddin Fabanyo, Anwar Panda, and Rahmat Rivai, during the 1980-2000 period.
Hence, Nahrawi is optimistic of building and supporting sports in North Maluku in a bid to realize national and international achievements.
Minister Nahrawi visited the Gelora Kieraha Ternate field and provided some sports equipment for 15 football schools under the auspices of Persiter of Ternate.
Nahrawi noted that the ministry was currently building the Gelora Kieraha by relying on the Regional Revenue and Expenditure Budget fund worth Rp1.5 billion.
Gelora Kieraha is currently unable to accommodate the audience, and assistance is expected to build it since Ternate City will host Haornas in 2018.
Meanwhile, Chairman of the Youth and Sport Office of Ternate City Sukarjan Hirto expressed hope that the Youth and Sports Ministry would offer support by allocating its budget for the development of Kieraha Ternate to boost the achievements of athletes in North Maluku.
He said that funds worth some Rp73 billion will be needed for the construction of Gelora Kieraha of Ternate to realize it as a sports arena.
This is since the Youth and Sports Ministry had allocated funds worth Rp3.5 billion in 2015 for the construction of Gelora Kieraha, though it is yet to be completed.
The Ternate government then submitted a proposal for funding to develop the sports facility to the youth and sports minister during his visit to Ternate.
