Ambon (Antara Maluku)- Public Works and Public Housing Minister Basuki Hadimuljono will help speed up infrastructure development in the eastern Indonesian province of Maluku, according to Governor Said Assagaff.

"During a meeting with the public works and public housing minister in Jakarta late December 2014, he said he was ready to help speed up infrastructure development in Maluku," Assagaff remarked here on Monday.

Maluku, also known as "the province of one thousand islands," is in dire need of infrastructure development to improve inter-island connectivity to facilitate easier access to the main city of Ambon.

"A large amount of funds are needed for the acceleration of infrastructure development in Maluku, and when I spoke about the matter to Minister Basuki Hadimuljono, he said he was ready to support it," the Maluku governor noted.

Wetar is directly adjacent to Timor Leste, and therefore, connectivity and infrastructure development there should be sped up, according to the governor.

He stated that the Trans Maluku program should be implemented to connect Wetar Island in Southwest Maluku district and Buru Island in Central Maluku district.

Furthermore, Governor Assagaff affirmed that the public works and public housing minister will also support the food security program in Maluku, particularly on Buru Island, which will be developed into the province`s food barn.

"Improvement of irrigation facilities and the management of rice fields in Buru are on top of our priority to turn the island into a food barn in the province of Maluku," Governor Assagaff remarked.

The governor revealed that he had met the public works and public housing minister in Jakarta late December to discuss the completion of the Merah Putih Bridge (JMP), which spans across Ambon Bay from the village of Galala to the village of Poka.

Assagaff said he had called on Minister Hadimuljono to help accelerate the completion of the JMP to reduce the travel time from Ambon city to Pattimura Airport from an hour to thirty minutes.

"We hope the bridge can be completed in June 2015 for President Joko Widodo to inaugurate it along with the other infrastructure facilities in the province," the governor added.
